The California Geological Survey has issued a new geologic and fault activity maps that cover the entire state. These maps provide much more information than previous versions (Jennings 1977 and 1994). The fault activity map includes some 50 new active traces, many of them small. However, there are some larger faults in northern California that have been added. The map only depicts faults that rupture the ground surface. Buried or concealed faults, such as the Puente Hills thrust system fault that caused the Whittier Narrows Earthquake in 1987, are not shown. The map comes in hard copy and as a web-based version that can be viewed in detail using your web browser. The State of California Water Resources Control Board issued a new General Permit for Construction in 2009, which becomes effective July 1, 2010. This permit has some significant changes for most sites, including the requirement for electronic filing of all permit related documents including the SWPPP, monitoring results and compliance or noncompliance notices. Numeric Action Levels for pH and turbidity have been included. A written Rain Event Action Plans must be prepared within 48 hours prior to a likely precipitation event. Also, all SWPPPs must address post construction BMPs. Be sure to check into the SWRCB website for information: http://www.swrcb.ca.gov/water_issues/programs/stormwater/constpermits.shtml |
